Royal Navy HMS Montrose in Valletta Port

The Royal Navy Duke class frigate HMS Montrose (F 236) has sailed into Valletta Port (the Grand Harbour) this morning on a courtesy visit. She has on board a Westland Lynx HMA.8SRU helicopter, serial ZF562.

The British frigate is presently berthing alongside at Pinto-1/2 wharf, and she's expected to sail from the Grand Harbour on Sunday, March 2. (27-Feb-2014)

Turkish Airlines B739 diverts to Malta IAP due to medical emergency

A Turkish Airlines Boeing B737-900ER (TC-JYF), performing flight TK-629 from Istanbul-Atatürk IAP (Turkey) to Accra-Kotoka IAP (Ghana), had to divert to Malta International Airport this afternoon due to a medical emergency on board. The aircraft continued with its flight to Accra after nearly two hours on the ground. (26-Feb-2013)

Malta IAP ranked fifth best in Europe out of 75 airports

Malta International Airport has been ranked the fifth best in Europe, according to the 2013 Airport Service Quality Awards. The Maltese airport ranked fifth out of a total 75 European airports surveyed, the Airports Council International said. The airport got an overall passenger satisfaction score of 4.17 on a scale from one (poor) to five (excellent). Of the top five European airports, only one other forms part of Malta International Airport’s category: airports which serve between two and five million passengers. NATO E-3A Component accepts invitation to participate at 2014 Malta International Airshow

The NATO E-3A Component has accepted the invitation made by the Malta Aviation Society to participate again in this year's static display during the Malta International Airshow 2014. This sophisticated and strange-looking flying radar is very popular with the crowds as the crew kindly open the aircraft for visitors to the airshow to have a peek inside the aircraft. Bad weather severely delays Air Malta London flight

Bad weather over the south of England last night has caused an Air Malta flight to Malta to be delayed by many hours. KM102 to London Heathrow was diverted to Gatwick late yesterday and the return flight, due in Malta just after midnight last night, is now expected at 4.30 p.m  today Air Malta provided accommodation and transport for passengers. Aircraft wing-tip hits LTM hangar at Malta AIP

An aircraft suffered slight wing-tip damage this afternoon when it hit the canvas outer cover of a hangar. The incident happened as the aircraft, which had no passengers, was being manoeuvred ahead of maintenance work at Lufthansa Technik Malta (LTM). Spanish AF's 'Patrulla Aguila' will be back at Malta Int'l Airshow after 19 years

The Spanish Air Force aerobatic team the 'Patrulla Aguila' will be back in Malta since their only visit in 1995. Flying 7 Casa C-101 Aviojets, the team renowned for their formation landings.  

Formed on July 4, 1985, the team is now in its 29th display season has an important national task, that of representing Spain and the Spanish AF in all events where their presence is required, proudly displaying the colors of the Spanish national flag, all the pilots on the team are flight instructor pilots. 

The display of the 'Patrulla Aguilla' is divided into three parts: 

The first part, the seven planes evolve together performing various acrobatic maneuvers with different types of training. This phase highlights the great rapport , coordination and accuracy of all its pilots performing showy maneuvers.

In the second part much more dynamic, breaking formation occurs planes separated into three groups: the SOLO, the PAR, and ROMBO. Each element in a coordinated maneuver with the other form, alternating in executing maneuvers so that you always have some forehead .

Finally, a third in which all planes get back together complete with passing display the colors of the flag of Spain, and eventually land in formation.

Air Malta and Air France sign code-sharing agreement

Air Malta and Air France have signed a code-share agreement whereby Air France will place its code and flight numbers on flights operated by Air Malta between Malta and Paris-CDG and Paris-Orly, and also between Malta and Lyon. Starting on March 30, the agreement will enable Air France to offer its customers 18 weekly services between the two French cities and Malta. The flights to/from CDG and Orly airports will connect with Air France’s extensive global and French domestic networks. The flights will be operated by the Maltese airline with A319/A320 aircraft. Czech AF ALCA and C295 to participate for the first time at the Malta Int'l Airshow

We have been officially informed of a new participant to the Malta International Airshow 2014. The Czech Air Force has officially confirmed participation with an L-159 advanced, multi-role combat aircraft in the flying display programme and a CASA 295 to support the display. This will be the third time the Czech Republic will feature at Malta's airshow after taking part in the 1997 and 1998 editions. (Source: maltairshow.com, 6-Feb-2014)

M.I.A. plc releases traffic results for January 2014

Malta International Airport saw a passenger increase of 11.2% in January 2014, over the same period last year, thanks to added capacity and a consistently positive seat load factor.

Traffic from the U.K. grew by 6.2%, thanks to the growth registered on the Liverpool, Edinburgh and Bristol routes. Traffic from Italy - the second biggest market - grew by 10.8%, mainly due to increased capacity in the Northern routes. A significant increase in capacity and seat load factor also contributed to substantial growth on the Libyan route.

Meanwhile, aircraft movements for the month increased by 10.5%. This was reflected in the increase of 10.6% in seat capacity which reached 299,172, when compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. Seat Load Factor registered an increase of 0.3%, while the maximum take-off weight increased by 12.3% when compared to 2013 figures. Cargo and mail registered a decline of 21.20% over the previous year.

French Navy FS Beautemps-Beaupré in Valletta Port

The French Navy oceanographic survey vessel FS Beautemps-Beaupré (A 758) has sailed into Valletta Port (the Grand Harbour) this morning on an informal visit.

The French survey vessel is presently berthing alongside at Pinto-5 wharf, and she's expected to sail from Malta on Friday, February 7. (4-Feb-2014)

Whirlwind causes considerable damage to light aircraft at Malta IAP

A whirlwind in the afternoon caused considerable damage at Malta International Airport. Two light-aircraft parked at apon-1 flipped over - a Piper PA28-161 Warrior II '9H-AEZ'  and a Piper PA28-161 Cherokee Warrior II '9H-FLY' - while a third light-aircraft - a Cessna U206B Super Skywagon '9H-ADW' - was pushed against the perimeter fence. Lufthansa Technik's hangar at apron-2 was also damaged. (1-Feb-2014)
